Everything You Need to Start a Blog

Everything You Need to Start a Blog

With a new year comes the desire to try new things. Maybe you have been tossing around the idea of starting a blog for a while or perhaps this is the first time you are mulling it over. Either way, I will share everything you need to start a blog.

Anyone can start and grow a successful blog.

Especially when they have an idea of what they are getting into and everything they need to start a blog.

I’m not going to cover the obvious things like a computer; if you are reading this you already at least have access to one.

So what do you need?

You Need the Right Mindset to Start a Blog

What is the right blogging mindset?

Well, for starters, blogging is not an excellent get-rich-quick plan. So if that’s what you’re thinking, scrap that idea right now.

If you want to build a successful blog, be prepared to work hard and consistently.

You have to put in the time if you want to see blogging success.

There is a lot to learn.

And once you learn that, there will be more.

You will face many challenges.

Leave the negativity and excuses at the door. There is no room for this in blogging.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Face fears.

Be open to change and personal growth.

Does this sound scary?

Do it anyway.

It isn’t my intention to scare you off of starting your blog, but your chances of success will be better if you know what you’re up against going in.

Consider hiring a mentor if you are serious about blogging but clueless about where to start (like I was).

Having a positive mindset, facing fears and personal growth requires constant work and practice. You should follow people who practice daily such as Ryan Biddulph or me.

If you have read this far, know that the most challenging part is out of the way.

The biggest roadblock to blogging success is you.

The next thing you need to do is somewhat easier to figure out.

You Need a Blogging Niche

A niche is just a specific area of focus that you will build your blog around.

In the world of blogging, the possibilities are endless.

For example:

And you have:

  • lifestyle blogs
  • blogs about pets
  • blogs about kids,
  • marriage blogs
  • divorce blogs
  • food blogs

As you see, the possibilities are endless.

choose a niche before you start blogging

That said, there are a few things to consider such as what your interests are.

You will get bored writing about something that you have no interest in all the time.

Writing willy nilly about multiple topics will also make it hard to keep audiences engaged.

Suppose your blog is about turtles, blog about turtles. I love turtles, but I don’t want to see posts on your blog about outer space. I have no interest in outer space.

I don't want to see posts about outer space on your turtle #blog. Keep readers engaged. Stick to topics related to your niche. Everything You Need To Start A Blog Click To Tweet

Once you have chosen the right mindset and a blogging niche, you absolutely must follow through with the next step.

Purchase a Domain and Hosting to Start a Blog

If you put in the time, hard work, blood, sweat, and tears to build a successful blog, own that thing, dammit!

To be clear, there should be no blood involved in building a blog and the only time you should be sweating is if it is sweltering outside or you are rearranging your office.

Hosting a blog on a third-party site is asking for trouble.

You could lose all that work in the blink of an eye.

You see, a third-party hosting site can pull your blog without warning or reason.

There is nothing you can do about it.

So, pay for your domain and hosting.

Make sure you back up your site regularly.

And enjoy the peace of mind knowing you have secured your little piece of online real estate.

  1. Hi SharlaAnn,
You have done such a great job with this. Straight up honesty and to the point. It is really very simple. But first one has to have the mindset that there is no such thing as a get rich quick plan.
One cannot be in it just for the money, rather be in it to raise consciousness of others with their specific niche.

    1. Hi Donna,
When we first start out online it can be easy to get overwhelmed by all the “shiny” new things. Products that do “everything” for you. Programs that teach you “how to become an online millionaire overnight “. You need this, you need that. Yet at the end of the day, none of it works unless you do. And, sometimes even if you work the “thing” you paid for doesn’t.

It’s important for new people to realize you don’t have to spend money on all the fancy tools right out of the gate. Are they nice to have? OF COURSE! Do you need them? You can probably get by with the free versions for a while.

But more on that next week! 😉

Thank you so much for stopping by and for the kind words. I appreciate it 🙂

      Take care,

  2. Hi SharlaAnn, I think the mindset is everything! You really need to have it for blogging to do it day after day, month after day, and year after year. You will have many ups and downs and have to feel enough confidence in your blog to deal with them. I know I’ve had my share over the past decade and will have more to come.
When I first started, I had a blogger blog, what a mess converting to WordPress. How I wish I started out with my own self-hosted blog from the get-go. Live and learn! Rinse and repeat 🙂

    1. Hi Lisa,
Mindset is everything! Just like a muscle, if you don’t use it, you lose it. You have to work it every day.
A good mindset helps you weather the crazy ups and downs, and I am sure you have learned how to deal with all of it very well.
I can’t imagine what a pain it would be converting a blog from one platform to another. I can’t even figure out why I can’t post to my Instagram business account or why I can’t send in a support ticket.🤦‍♀️
But as you said, live and learn. Rinse and repeat.
